Thailand Moves Toward Becoming a Leading Destination Wedding Hub in Asia
Thailand is strengthening its position as one of Asia’s key destinations for Destination Weddings, with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recognising the Wedding & Honeymoon market as a high-potential niche tourism segment and continuing efforts to position Thailand as a global wedding hub for couples from around the world.
Destination Weddings have become an increasingly important segment of international tourism. Unlike conventional leisure travel, a wedding celebration can bring couples, families, and groups of friends to a destination for several days, generating spending across hotels, venues, restaurants, transportation, entertainment, and other wedding-related services.
For Thailand, this presents an opportunity to connect its tourism strengths with the growing global demand for memorable wedding experiences.

TAT Recognises Wedding & Honeymoon Tourism as a High-Potential Market
Thailand’s ambition to strengthen its position in the international wedding market is not new.
In 2016, the Tourism Authority of Thailand stated that it wanted Thailand to become a “global wedding hub for couples of every nationality.” TAT also highlighted Wedding & Honeymoon tourism as a high-spending, long-staying niche market with the potential to distribute tourism income and create employment in local areas.
TAT noted that wedding celebrations typically involve groups of guests and can generate significant spending depending on the scale of the event. Beyond the wedding venue itself, the economic impact can extend to accommodation, food and beverage, decorations, entertainment, transportation, gifts, and other supporting services.
This approach reflects a broader understanding of Wedding Tourism: a destination wedding is not simply a one-day event, but can become a multi-day travel experience involving an entire group of visitors.

Thailand's Diverse Destinations Create a Competitive Advantage
One of Thailand’s strongest advantages in the Destination Wedding market is the diversity of destinations and experiences available across the country.
Couples can choose from tropical beach weddings, luxury resort celebrations, private villas, city weddings, traditional Thai ceremonies, cultural celebrations, and intimate destination weddings.
TAT has repeatedly highlighted Thailand’s combination of diverse locations, luxury accommodation, professional wedding organisers, Thai hospitality, food, and tourism experiences as key strengths for the wedding and honeymoon market.
From the beaches of Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Samui to the cultural atmosphere of northern Thailand and the sophisticated riverside setting of Bangkok, the country offers different environments for couples with different wedding styles and expectations.
This diversity also allows couples to combine their wedding celebrations with a holiday, honeymoon, wellness experience, or cultural journey.

Thailand Hosted One of Asia's Major International Wedding Events
Thailand’s efforts to develop its international wedding market have included attracting global wedding professionals to the country.
In May 2017, Phuket hosted the Destination Wedding Planners Congress (DWP Congress), bringing together more than 450 wedding planners from 65 countries. It was the first time the major international wedding industry event had been held in Asia, with TAT serving as the host.
At the time, Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sports said the government recognised weddings and honeymoons as one of the top generators of tourism revenue and aimed to develop Thailand as the “hub of wedding and romance” in the ASEAN region.
The event provided Thailand with an opportunity to showcase its destinations, venues, hospitality, cuisine, and wedding services directly to international wedding planners and industry decision-makers.
TAT also expected the event to strengthen Thailand’s image as a global wedding destination and help expand the country’s source markets beyond Asia to Europe, the United States, and Latin America.
International Demand Continues, Especially from India
India has become one of the most important international markets for Thailand’s wedding industry.
According to TAT, Thailand has hosted more than 400 Indian weddings annually over the past two years, with celebrations incorporating traditional Indian customs, personalised décor, entertainment, Indian cuisine, private chefs, and ceremonial specialists.
The appeal extends beyond the wedding ceremony itself. Many wedding guests also extend their stay to experience Thailand’s wellness and spa offerings, shopping, cultural attractions, and other tourism experiences.
This demonstrates the broader economic potential of Destination Weddings. A single wedding can bring not only the couple but also family members, friends, and wedding professionals to the destination, creating demand across multiple tourism and hospitality businesses.
Thailand Recognised as a Leading International Wedding Destination
Thailand’s position in the international wedding market has also received recent recognition.
In November 2025, TAT was named the “Most Popular International Wedding Destination 2025” at the TTJ MICE Mart & Awards in New Delhi, India. TAT said the recognition reinforced Thailand’s reputation as a leading destination for Indian weddings and celebrations, supported by Thai hospitality, world-class service, diverse venues, luxury resorts, and personalised experiences.
The recognition is particularly relevant given the importance of the Indian wedding market and the continued demand for destination celebrations in Thailand.

Destination Weddings Create a Wider Tourism Ecosystem
The economic value of Destination Weddings extends well beyond hotels and wedding venues.
A destination wedding can involve accommodation, venue rental, food and beverage, floral and event decoration, photography and videography, entertainment, transportation, beauty services, excursions, wellness, shopping, and other tourism experiences.
TAT has previously highlighted this wider “ripple effect”, noting that wedding events generate income for numerous suppliers, including decorators, gift and souvenir businesses, party organisers, food and beverage providers, audiovisual companies, musicians, and other service providers.
This makes Wedding Tourism particularly attractive as a segment that can connect tourism, hospitality, events, lifestyle, and experience-based travel.
Thailand's Wedding Industry Continues to Build Its Ecosystem
The development of Thailand’s wedding industry is also being supported by private-sector initiatives.
In 2026, KTC partnered with Weddinglist and other public and private-sector organisations to support Thailand Weddinglist 2026, an initiative focused on building a comprehensive wedding ecosystem and strengthening Thailand’s positioning as a global wedding destination. The event brought together more than 200 premium brands and highlighted the continued growth potential of Thailand’s wedding market.
Weddinglist also estimated that Thailand’s overall wedding business could reach approximately THB 50–60 billion by 2027, with Destination Weddings identified as one of the factors supporting market growth.
The development of this ecosystem is important because modern couples increasingly expect more than a venue. They are looking for complete experiences that combine accommodation, celebration, dining, travel, entertainment, and personalised services.
From Wedding Destination to Wedding Experience
The evolution of Destination Weddings is closely connected to the growth of experience-based travel.
For international couples, choosing Thailand can mean more than holding a ceremony at a beautiful venue. A wedding can become the centrepiece of a longer trip involving family holidays, pre-wedding activities, cultural experiences, wellness treatments, island excursions, fine dining, and a honeymoon.
TAT has also highlighted Thailand’s ability to combine weddings and honeymoons with a wide range of tourism experiences, reinforcing the country’s potential as both a wedding and holiday destination.
This combination gives Thailand an important competitive advantage: couples can organise their wedding and create an entire destination experience within the same trip.
Thailand's Opportunity to Become a Wedding Hub in Asia
Thailand’s continued promotion of Wedding & Honeymoon tourism, international recognition, strong demand from markets such as India, and the development of a wider wedding ecosystem all point in the same direction.
Thailand is strengthening its position as one of Asia’s important Destination Wedding markets.
TAT has previously expressed its ambition to develop Thailand into a global wedding hub, while the government has also described the country’s goal as becoming a hub for wedding and romance in the ASEAN region.
More recently, Thailand’s recognition as the Most Popular International Wedding Destination 2025 and the continued arrival of hundreds of Indian weddings each year provide further evidence of the country’s strong appeal in the international wedding market.
Rather than being simply a place to hold a ceremony, Thailand has the potential to offer couples an integrated destination experience combining weddings, holidays, hospitality, culture, wellness, food, and romance in one journey.
The Future of Destination Weddings in Thailand
As international couples increasingly look for meaningful and personalised celebrations, Thailand is well positioned to benefit from the continued evolution of Destination Wedding tourism.
Its combination of diverse destinations, internationally recognised hospitality, luxury resorts, experienced wedding professionals, strong tourism infrastructure, and rich cultural experiences gives the country a strong foundation for the international wedding market.
The continued focus from TAT, together with growing participation from the private sector, suggests that Wedding Tourism will remain an important opportunity for Thailand’s tourism and hospitality industries.
Thailand is not simply competing to be a place where couples get married. It is positioning itself as a destination where couples, families, and friends can celebrate, travel, and create lasting experiences together.
And that is what makes Destination Wedding an increasingly valuable opportunity for Thailand not only as a wedding market, but as part of the country’s broader international tourism strategy.
